“Happiness is an attitude to life as a whole, while joy lives in the moment.” Rabbi Jonathan Sacks
This week at Maayan we experienced many moments of joy! We wished mazal tov to three families on occasions of special moments. The joy of these moments was deepened as they were shared with community.
Joyful moments can also be small and private and sometimes we must look deeply, to pause, to notice them. When times are tough or confusing, or when we feel sadness and even despair, it is even more valuable to pay attention to the joy. Here are a few questions to ask your children to help:
What made you laugh today?
Can you tell me about your favorite toy and why you love it?
What’s your favorite thing to do with me?
What’s something you’re really good at?
What’s your favorite family tradition?
What’s something that makes you feel happy?
Can you teach me something new?
What’s your favorite story that I’ve read to you?
Rabbi Sacks concludes, “joy lives not in thoughts of tomorrow, but in the grateful acceptance and celebration of today.”
